DRAGONS
The Dragons Society was started in 1985 by Colin Suggett, and nearly 25 other members of the Club.
Colin who started as Captain and carried on as the Captain for a further 4 years until 1989.
The Society was started to give the over 55’s and retired the chance to play midweek under competition rules and maintain an official Handicap.
The Society over the years has gone from strength to strength and now has over 60 members.
They have their own organising committee and captain, who is elected every year. The captain for 2025 will be Alec Cowling.
Their main competitions are played on Wednesday mornings.
They also have Singles & Doubles Knockouts that can be played at any time up to the agreed dates (as noted on the knockout draw sheets).
In addition to normal club competitions, we also play 4 or 5 Inter club matches, home & away against clubs in the region. And are generally on a Tuesday or Thursday.
This just gives players the opportunity to play at other courses and also represent the Club.
Anyone interested in joining the Dragons must be a fully paid playing member of the Club, but please register your interest at : admin@stocksbridgegolfclub.co.uk
RABBITS
Rabbits golf is more or less unique to Yorkshire. The Rabbits section is a well-established section within the club, founded in 1985 and is for male and female members aged 18 and over with a World Handicap System Index of 15.0 and above who enjoy friendly, competitive golf, and an opportunity to play other courses around Yorkshire. Our section at Stocksbridge is part of the wider Wakefield Rabbits Golf Association (WRGA) which currently has 16 associated golf clubs and sits under the overall Yorkshire Rabbits Golf Association (YRGA) which has 6 Areas with a total of over 100 golf clubs taking part.
Playing in the Rabbits section gives our members the opportunity to meet and play with other players of a similar standard and, most importantly, have fun taking part. Everyone is welcome to play on either a regular or occasional basis and we try to ensure there are lots of opportunities to take part. It is an ideal way for new and existing members to take part in friendly and competitive golf, play at different courses, make new friends and have the chance to win some new trophies.
Our main Rabbits activities include:
– “Friendly” home and away matches against other clubs in South Yorkshire, including Wortley, Silkstone, Wath & Waterton Park. Each match is followed by a drink and a sit-down meal with our opponents. Matches are mainly scheduled for weekday afternoons to enable as many players as possible to have the opportunity to play.
– We have the opportunity to take part in various WRGA matches against other YRGA areas at venues across Yorkshire, plus enter prestigious competitions such as the Fowler Trophy, Thornton Trophy and Plowright Trophy to name a few. We also are looking to host a WRGA match at our golf club going forward
The Rabbits season generally runs from April to September and whilst Rabbits golf is always competitive, the accent is very much on having fun. There is a nominal subscription to join the section but no cost to play in the friendly matches (other than the cost of the meal and drinks afterwards, typically £10-15). All of our fixtures are published in advance on our Master Scoreboard for people’s awareness.
So, there you have it. Rabbits golf is the ideal way for any one with a handicap between 15.0 and 54.0 to take part in golf matches at home and away across Yorkshire, make new friends and a chance to win a team or individual event. Anyone existing members or someone joining the golf club is most welcome to come along and join our Rabbits section, improve their golf and have a great time in doing so.
