Est. 1924

Stocksbridge Golf Club was formed in 1924. There were three pioneers-in-chief – L. Drabble, J Kilbride & H. Saxby. Three years previously the trio recognised the potential of the less wealthy inhabitants of Stocksbridge and the surrounding area and devised ways and means of bringing the Royal and Ancient game within the reach of the local people.

The course boasted among its attractions the Dragon’s Well. Where according to folklore, the Dragon of Wharncliffe slaked his thirst in days gone by, by flying across the valley from his lair on the Wharncliffe Crags.

The course started as a 9 hole course and was extended to 15 holes in 1982.

The current 18 hole course layout was completed in 1990.

The course is situated 11miles North of the Sheffield city centre and only 5 miles from junction 36 of the M1

Overlooking the village of Deepcar and at its highest point over 900ft above sea level you can enjoy the views of the Peak District National Park to the West and the Lincolnshire wolds to the East. A full 360 degree view for 40 miles into the distance.

The course is best described as upland heath in its terrain and is relatively short by today’s standards but not to be underestimated. The small island greens, often surrounded by rough and a flat lie being a rarity makes it a challenging.

The par is 65 from the yellow tees but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a pushover, if the wind is blowing especially on some of the par-3 holes you will be nearer 70.
